Social network for pets YummyPets has launched a new campaign to find out once and for all if Britain is ultimately a nation of dog-lovers or cat-lovers.

To uncover where the UK’s loyalties lie YummyPets will be hosting a bespoke poll on its website for the next month, at the end of which the victor will be announced.

To promote the poll YummyPets has recruited team captains in the form of original TOWIE cast member Amy Childs and former Made in Chelsea star Gabriella Ellis for Team Dog and Team Cat respectively.

In terms of numbers alone it is estimated that the nearly one in four UK households own at least one dog (23 per cent), meaning the dog population is around eight million. There are far fewer cat-owning households (around one in twenty) though their population in the UK is still thought to be around eight million as well.

According to YummyPets statistics in its French portal dog profiles are ahead of cats but in the UK it’s a 50/50 split, hence the reason for the investigation.
