Commissioned data from YouGov revealed that almost three-quarters of women said they would open up about their struggles if a friend reached out to them in private.

The instant messaging app has released another campaign touting its privacy credentials. In the spot, viewers see a woman telling her friend that she has had a positive pregnancy test. Using all the various features that WhatsApp has to offer, she’s able to do this in confidence before she’s ready to tell her partner.

Appearing across broadcast and digital video channels, the campaign also features a partnership with ex-Arsenal footballer Alex Scott. The English sports star is championing a series of mirrored messages appearing in private spaces, including women’s bathrooms in pubs and bars in the UK, that hope to help encourage women to check in on their friends.

On the project, Scott said: “In my experience, I don’t think you can check in on someone or offer someone help too many times. I’m proud to partner with WhatsApp to help encourage women to reach out to their friends, even if it’s with a simple message, and I hope it helps women all over the world know they’re not alone in whatever struggles they may be facing.”

To coincide with the launch, Meta’s Mark Zuckerberg has announced a new privacy feature called Silence Unknown Callers, which helps to screen out spam and calls from unknown people for added protection.

Vivian Odior, global head of marketing at WhatsApp, added: “Privacy is at the core of everything we do at WhatsApp. From Chat Lock to Disappearing Messages, every new feature we bring to our users adds to our multiple layers of protection. With two new privacy-first features coming to WhatsApp, we’re proud to introduce this campaign that shows the vital role that private messages and sisterhood play in empowering our users. We hope it helps start important conversations on WhatsApp, which always start with a single private message.”
