Hosted by influential radio personality Angie Martinez, season one of the podcast will explore the Notorious BIG’s final album right in time for hip-hop’s 50th anniversary.

A new trailer released by Warner Music Group’s WMX heralds the launch of a new visual podcast: ‘Iconic Records: Albums that Defined a Generation.’

The podcast, hosted by the radio personality Angie Martinez – who has been called “the voice of New York” – pays homage to some of the most seminal hip-hop albums. Its debut season, premiering on The Roku Channel on April 29, will focus on Christopher George Latore Wallace, the late iconic rapper better known as the Notorious BIG or Biggie Smalls, and his last album: Life After Death.

The show comprises 25 exclusive interviews between Martinez and hip-hop luminaries – including Lil Cease, Pusha T, Too Short and others – to uncover Biggie’s last 18 months alive and his enduring legacy.

“The Notorious BIG is a once-in-a-lifetime talent,” Wayne Barrow, manager of The Notorious BIG, said in a statement. “His work has been examined and reviewed before, but this series provides new stories and firsthand accounts by the people that were there. It’s something special.”

The campaign for the podcast features snippets of some of the show’s interviews. It went live today across WMX’s social channels as well as Roku.

The podcast’s release date is timed to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the genesis of hip-hop. Some reports point to a single birthday party that occurred in the Bronx – a borough in New York City – on August 11, 1973 as the event that sparked the birth of the musical genre. At the party, the Jamaican-American DJ Kool Herc was spinning hard funk tracks from singers like James Brown. During his set, Herc created syncopated beats by mixing drum breaks from different songs.
