GIC, the sovereign wealth fund owned by the Singapore government, has transformed advertising panels at bus stops around the country into urban farms as part of its 40th anniversary celebrations.

Gardening enthusiasts from the community have been tapped to grow and maintain the crops

The campaign – called ’Bold Vision’ and created by 72andSunny with local urban farmer Gardens with Purpose – sees these panels house butterhead lettuce and Chinese broccoli, to signify GIC’s future vision for the future of sustainability.

Gardening enthusiasts from the community have been tapped to grow and maintain the crops and the harvested vegetables – expected to weigh over 100kg – will be donated to Willing Hearts, a community kitchen that delivers meals to thousands of needy families.

“We are pleased to work with 72andSunny for these urban farm bus stops,” said Mah Lay Choon, head of corporate communications at GIC. ”The ’Bold Vision’ campaign was planned to engender an understanding of GIC’s history as well as our commitment to Singapore’s future, which will include tackling sustainability challenges.

“We wish for these urban farms to spark ideas on more ways to incorporate growing fresh vegetables at home or in the community.”

Joanne Ng, owner of Gardens with Purpose, explained the farmer has been creating awareness of urban farming through classes with members of the public and students.

“We are very excited to work on this as I believe it will get people to reimagine urban farming and how they too might start growing their favorite vegetables,” she said.

This urban farm installation is part of GIC’s 40th anniversary campaign, which launched in October to explain GIC’s formation through a series of historical objects across various platforms, together with the release of a commemorative book.
