IHG Hotels & Resorts has chosen to unify its communications strategy for its Holiday Inn and Holiday Inn Express brands as part of a broader celebration of human connections.

The 'We’re There' campaign strives for authenticity by communicating the role played by both brands in connecting people worldwide since the opening of the first Holiday Inn in Memphis back in 1952 right through to the present day. The brand operates a family of nearly 4,000 venues worldwide.

Claire Bennett, global chief marketing officer for IHG, said: "Being there in person matters. We know the reason people travel is not exclusively about the location itself; it's almost always about the people. Travel brings families and friends closer, creates stronger relationships among business colleagues and connects the world.

"Across our hotels, we share some of the most important moments in our guests' lives – from birthdays and weddings to key business trips and job interviews. The history and heritage of these two brands in particular means we've always been there, so our guests can be, too. The launch of 'We're There' reminds us all of the importance of these 'people' trips and how we can help make that happen in more places, for more people, more often."

This emphasis on heritage and ubiquity carries through to a message of inclusiveness by focusing on real-world interactions to counter an increasingly digital and divisive world where 67% of Americans communicated with a good friend primarily by digital channels, according to a survey conducted by IHG.

Among its findings was the fact that 59% of US citizens admit to communicating with family members via technology rather than in person, despite evidence of a preference for physical contact among business travelers, with fully 88% preferring to meet face to face.

Holiday Inn completed a $1bn brand relaunch at the hands of Ogilvy & Mather in 2013.
