US Creative Work of the Week: Tim Hortons brings sole Kenyan hockey team to Canada
Hockey isn’t widely played in Africa. In fact, Kenya only has one team, the Kenyan Ice Lions, and they play on the only ice rink in east and central Africa.
Tim Hortons and agency Zulu Alpha Kilo partnered up to give the Ice Lions the game of a lifetime. The brand brought the team over to Canada to face some competition. When the team reached the locker room, they found new jerseys and equipment, and words of encouragement from NHL stars Sidney Crosby and Nathan MacKinnon, who joined them on ice. A touching film showed the pure joy the Kenyan team had during their time in Canada.
“It is a dream to not only have the chance to play in Canada, but to play – for the first time – in full gear alongside two of the greatest players of the game,” said Benard Azegere, captain of the Kenya Ice Lions.“ When we first started playing in Kenya, we didn’t even have full equipment, but now not only do we have that, we can say we’ve played a real game with some All-Star teammates.”
Tim Hortons also made a donation to Kenya's youth hockey league. For its inspirational moment, The Drum’s readers voted the campaign the US (eh, Canadian) Work of the Week.
