The Drum Online Media Awards 2018 shortlist announced

2018's entries covered a diverse breadth of material in journalism within categories like Podcast of the Year, National News Site of the Year and Specialist/Local News Site of the Year.

Member of the judging panel and co-founder of WikiTribune, Orit Kopel said: “The cardinal role of journalism is clearly taking priority and there is a substantial effort to deliver high quality news coverage globally and locally. In the information era, news publications are investing in standing out from the information circulated in social media.

“I found greater attempts to look for unique stories, bringing to the front a variety of voices and promoting awareness to trends and events which weren't covered properly in the past”.

The nominees for National News Site of the Year include: Bloomberg, The Guardian, HuffPostUK, iNews, London Evening Standard, Sky News and The Sun.

Senior digital editor, Deutsche Welle, Esra Dogramaci was particularly impressed with the Specialist/Local News Site of the Year category. She said: “There's a saying that 'all journalism is local,' so the number of local publications taking global trends such as developments in digital and applying at to specific contexts with relevance was particularly inspiring.”

The nominees for Specialist/Local News Site of the Year include: BBC Online - East of England for Maternity Unit Live, Belfast Telegraph for Belfast Telegraph Digital, Calvert 22 Foundation for The Calvert Journal, Climate Home News, Cornwall Live / Trinity Mirror for Cornwall Live, Gay Star News for 24/7 LGBTI News, PinkNews, The Bristol Cable for redefining local media, The Detail and The Scots Magazine for Celebrating Scotland's Culture.

You can view the full list of nominations here. The awards ceremony will take place 22 May at The London Marriot Grosvenor Square, you can book your table now online.

Partners of the awards are: The Digital Content Summit 2018, British Journalism Review, Pars.ly and the Press Association.
