US president-elect Donald Trump has taken to Twitter to criticize the media for ‘inciting’ a wave of protests across the country since his surprise election win was announced on Wednesday.

With a wounded ego Trump accused his critics of being ‘professional protesters’ just 48 hours after giving a magnanimous victory speech in which he promised to reach out to all Americans.

Thousands of people protested for a second night with marches taking place from New York to Los Angeles, proving too much of a target to ignore for Trump.

The comments follow an awkward meeting with president Barack Obama in the White House at which the two exchanged pleasantries before shaking hands through gritted teeth in an awkward photo-shoot.

A little earlier Trump had banned the media from covering his arrival at the White House, a break with long-standing protocol.
