US television networks ABC and NBC have come under fire after they banned a risqué fashion retailer’s commercial which sought to promote plus size models wearing little or no clothing.

Running to 30 seconds ‘This Body’ by Lane Bryant featured models including Ashley Graham, who graced the front cover of Sports Illustrated earlier this year, but were blocked from broadcast for failing to meet the broadcasters decency standards.

Speaking to Mashable an NBC spokesperson said: “As part of the normal advertising standards process, we reviewed a rough cut of the ad and asked for minor edits to comply with broadcast indecency guidelines. The ad was not rejected and we welcome the updated creative."

Despite, or perhaps because of, the controversy the ad has been racking up close to 1m hits on Facebook with Lane Bryant pitching it as the ad ‘the networks don’t want you to see’.

The retailer has vowed not to edit its piece to keep the networks happy and will instead continue to push the commercial via social media.

The networks didn’t want you to see this. But we do. Share. Tag. Show everyone what #ThisBody’s made for.
