#OscarsSoWhite has been used more than 250,000 times in past week
The hashtag ‘#OscarsSoWhite,’ which has gained steam in recent days in response to the fact that no people of color were nominated for Academy Awards in any major categories for the second year in a row, has been used approximately 256,000 times in the past week according to social media monitoring platform Spredfast.
Conversation around the subject peaked on Thursday when nominations were initially announced but has continued as celebrities including director Spike Lee and actress Jada Pinkett Smith have stated that they will not be attending the awards ceremony this year.
Top tweets including the hashtag have come from MSNBC national correspondent Joy Reid, stand-up comic Hari Kondabolu and chair of Howard University’s Department of Afro-American Studies Greg Carr.
