Facebook has apologised to its 1.5bn user base after the site was abruptly taken offline at 17:30 yesterday evening after ‘something went wrong’ with the companies servers.

The technical hitch left millions disappointed as they attempted to log-in only to be presented by a grey screen of death and a meek ‘sorry’ message from Facebook’s engineers as they scrabbled to ascertain what had gone wrong.

A short message read: “"Sorry, something went wrong. We're working on it and we'll get it fixed as soon as we can.”

Fortunately for Facebook addicts the outage proved short lived with the site springing back to life after around 20 minutes.

Analysis of the outage showed most of those affected resided in Europe and the US although downtime was logged as far afield as South America and India.
