Electrical Safety First, the UK charity dedicated to reducing deaths and injuries caused by electrical accidents, has launched a new online video campaign to help UK consumer audiences understand their obligations under Part P of the Building Regulations and the importance of using registered electricians.

The new video highlights that electical DIY can prove fatal.

The interactive video, created by digital agency Code Computerlove, offers two scenarios. Viewers can flick between the ‘good’ and ‘bad’ scenarios by pressing ‘P’ on a keyboard. It highlights that taking on electrical work yourself is not only likely to be illegal but it can also be deadly. The campaign uses the hashtag #dontdiefordiy.

Emma Apter, head of communications at Electrical Safety First, said: “When you Press P you can follow Dad’s decision to either replace the fusebox himself in time for his daughter’s birthday party or to call in a registered electrician to do the work. By switching between the two stories, you can see the impact of his decisions.”

“The video was created following our research that showed 80% of people don’t know that certain electrical jobs should only be carried out by a registered electrician. The campaign highlights that doing electrical DIY could mean that you are breaking the law or worse could result in a fatal disaster in the home with devastating effects on your family.”

This is the latest in a series of creative interactive mechanics that have been produced by Electrical Safety First in partnership with Code Computerlove to get serious electrical safety messages out to DIYers in an engaging way. Previous work has included an interactive game and three previous videos.
