Twitter has partnered with mobile payment company Square to allow political donations to be made through a tweet.

The partnership will allow Twitter users to donate money to verified presidential candidates over the social media platform by clicking on a “contribute” button contained within the candidate’s badge.

Once a candidate has been verified by Square they will be given their own unique image containing a button to their campaign fundraising account which can be shared across Twitter.

Users wishing to donate can click the button and select a donation amount before filling in their card and Federal Electoral Commission required information. Twitter will then give them the option to share the candidates $Cashtag- the image containing the “contribute” button.

Campaigns will benefit from being able to execute tailored digital fundraising, in real time, on the platform where political conversations are accelerating ahead of the 2016 presidential elections in November.

Candidates will be keen to sign up for the service given the huge numbers of users who take to the social media platform to voice their opinions and support of their chosen candidates. The first presidential debate resulted in a huge increase in traffic on the Twitter with 1.5 million tweets going out during the televised debate.
