Johnston Press is eyeing up a potential merger to help combat the falling circulation – and ad revenue – of newspapers.

Ashley Highfield, the chief executive of Johnston Press chief, which publishes over 200 titles including the Scotsman, said the company is potentially looking to consolidate its resources (even with a rival), according to the Telegraph.

Highfield said: “The recent fall in our share price has made us crisper on what we’d be prepared to pay for things. All the mood music is there.

“Our lawyers have looked at a number of different combinations as a desk exercise and you could get it done. You might have to sell one or two things but for the most part there is not much overlap.”

The move could see the shrinkage of local media owners in the UK, and could further homogenise the press.
