Times lands newspaper of the year at Press Awards
The Times has been named newspaper of the year 2014 at the Press Awards after being praised for its ‘searing’ investigative work into the sexual exploitation of children in Rotherham.
Explaining their decision the judges wrote: “Its searing investigation has changed the way the UK treats the issue. It is a brilliant newspaper that defied political correctness and a political cover-up and was brilliantly vindicated in the process. The judges said a special mention needs to go, not for the first time this evening, to the man who broke that story.”
In a good night for the broadsheet it also picked up seven other awards, amongst them two separate awards for reporter Andrew Norfolk who broke the abuse story and a nod to Matthew Parris who was named political journalist of the year.
Elsewhere the Daily Mirror netted six gongs, including the digital award, whilst the Guardian’s Simon Goodley was named business and finance journalist of the year.
The Daily Mail also performed well with Peter Campbell securing young journalist award, Matt Lawton earning plaudits for his sports journalism and Rebecca Hardy being named interviewer of the year. Quentin Letts was named best columnist of 2014.
