Airbnb has launched a real-time interactive map revealing how many customers are signing into venues globally at any one time.

The feature was launched following the firm's record-breaking New Year’s Eve which saw 550,000 travellers use the Airbnb app – 91,000 of which were first time customers. In contrast, the app only saw 2,000 bookings on New Years Eve five years ago.

The interactive map, created by production company Tool, showcases Airbnb activity around the globe with real-time action illustrated in motion with the #OneLessStranger campaign, global hotspots and guest check-ins also documented.

Andrew Schapiro, head of Airbnb’s art department, said: “Part of the challenge of building this experience was thinking through how we can marry the scale of Airbnb experiences happening around the globe with the nature of these experiences.

“The connections people are making are deeply human and personal. So we decided to take a somewhat whimsical and playful approach with the map, bringing live through figures and geographic elements that represent the diversity of the planet.”

Interesting venues up for grabs through Airbnb in 2014 included a Waterstones store, a ‘pimped-out’ airliner in Amsterdam and Paris’ Galeries Lafayette.

The interactive map can be viewed here.
