The founder of mobile network Giffgaff and former global director of business innovation at Telefonica, Gav Thompson, has joined customer engagement company Thunderhead as chief marketing officer.

In his new role Thompson will be responsible for the strategic direction of the Thunderhead.com brand, the go-to-market execution and driving the entire global marketing operation.

Prior to his tenure at Telefonica, Thompson founded giffgaff in 2008, to drive better customer engagement with O2’s digitally-enabled consumer base. He has also worked at Abbott Mead Vickers BBDO, BBDO New York, TBWA and Publicis.

Thompson commented on his appointment: “The marketing landscape is changing faster than ever before. Thunderhead has anticipated this by developing a completely unique and ground-breaking approach to customer engagement, with a solution that is purpose-built for a 21st century CMO.

“It will be a great privilege to help the team continue their launch of this powerful capability to the global CMO community.”

As part of Thompson’s role he will be responsible for helping scale the Thunderhead brand and market impact of the organisation’s One Engagement Hub, which ties together customer insight, context and journey behaviour.
