Express apologises to Mike Tindall over 'rumours' about marriage to Zara Phillips
The Express has apologised and settled out of court with Mike Tindall, former England rugby player and husband of Zara Phillips, after reporting 'rumours' about his marriage.
Apology: Mike Tindall
In an apology published today, the Express said: “In an article published on 10 February 2013 entitled ‘Zara and Mike in marriage blip’ we reported rumours that Mike Tindall’s marriage was in trouble and that his wife had left the marital home.
“We accept that this was untrue and recognise that this reporting was intrusive. We apologise to Mike Tindall for any distress the article may have caused him.”
A spokesman for Tindall said he would donate the compensation money to charity. He was quoted by the Guardian as saying: “The legal action was brought as a matter of principle to protect intrusion of privacy and on the basis of merely ‘rumours’ being falsely reported… These rumours caused considerable distress.”
The case was settled ahead of court hearings due to begin next month.
