Channel 4has announced that Jeremy Paxman, former host of the BBC’s Newsnight, is to anchor the station’s coverage of the UK general election in May 2015.

Paxman’s return to the small screen follows an outgoing interview with the channel’s own veteran news presenter Jon Snow and will see the heavyweight interviewer name Britain’s next prime minister.

Commenting on his role Paxman said: “There are new and interesting questions to ask about the way we choose our governments. This should be fun.”

Channel 4’s chief creative officer Jay Hunt added: “Jeremy is a compelling presenter and makes truly unmissable TV for those big political moments. His sense of mischief and danger make him a fantastic fit with Four.”

Channel 4 previously won plaudits for its ‘alternative’ coverage of the 2010 general election, a live broadcast which secured a 10.4 per cent market share – ahead of ITV’s own coverage.
