Samsung has today (28 August) unveiled a new smartwatch which it says will “redefine the idea of the smart wearable” as it expands 3G connection directly to the watch without the need for a smartphone.

The Samsung Gear S features a range of optimised features including Bluetooth and WiFi connectivity as well as the ability to make and receive calls directly from their wrist.

The watch, which has a curved Super Amoled display, runs on Samsung’s own operating system Tizen rather than Google's Android Wear like its other wearable products.

“Samsung is leading this exciting and rapidly developing wearable category through progressive innovation,” said JK Shin, chief executive and head of IT and mobile communication at Samsung Electronics.

“The Samsung Gear S redefines the idea of the smart wearable and the culture of mobile communication. It will let consumers live a truly connected life anywhere, anytime.”

The Gear S, available from October, has a pedestrian navigation service provided by Here, a 24-hour news and views service from The Financial Times called ‘fastFT’ and the ability to see and respond to social notifications instantly with Facebook.
