ITV is to simulcast the second independence debate on the channel and its online video platform.

Announcing the plans at the Edinburgh International TV Festival on Friday, 22 August, ITV director of television Peter Fincham said that the second debate – which will include two panels from each side of the referendum debate – will be broadcast live on the ITV website as well as being aired later in full on ITV.

The first debate, broadcast on STV, faced technical issues on the STV Player, which meant no-one outside Scotland could watch the first debate.

The full debate will take place on STV on 2 September.

Defending the decision to not show the first debate outside Scotland, he stated: “We don’t have an equivalent of BBC2.

“I don’t think playing it between 8pm and 10pm on the main channel, I don’t think that’s right for us. I’m very happy we are playing it at 10.35pm and it will be on STV and itvnews.com.”

He put the STV Player crash down to unprecedented demand.

Alex Salmond and Alistair Darling will again debate independence tonight, 25 August, on BBC2.
