Mark Porter, former creative director at The Guardian and responsible for the current format and look of the newspaper, along with Dylan Griffith, formerly creative director at MTV, have completely re-branded Dutch TV news channel RTL Nieuws.

British designers Mark Porter Associates and Smörgåsbord Studio – where Griffith works – handled the creation of a new logo, on-screen graphics and studio set for RTL Nieuws.

Caroline Schnellen, marketing and communications manager at RTL Nieuws, said: “Everything has changed since we introduced our previous identity in 2007. The world of news, the way we consume news and RTL Nieuws itself.

“With all this in mind it became the right time to rethink the brand’s visual identity. We needed to show one brand, one look-and-feel, on TV, web and app. In order to do so we felt this could only truly happen if we would change all platforms at the same time. What followed was an immense project, with many parties involved and close coordination throughout."

The rebrand, which took 18 months, went live this week.

"In a world where most TV news design is still stuck in the 1980s, we wanted our rebrand for RTL Nieuws to be a breath of fresh air", said Porter. "Broadcasters no longer have a monopoly on the distribution of news. In the age of Twitter and YouTube, people can find out for themselves what’s going on in the world. The broadcaster’s role has changed.”

Animations for the title sequences, stings and bumpers were created in collaboration with Sheffield-based digital artists Universal Everything.
