Maria Miller, the culture secretary, was insulted on her department’s own Twitter feed, as the Department of Culture, Media and Sport was hacked yesterday.

Tweets suggested that Miller, who this week apologised for £45,800 overclaimed on her mortgage in 2009, was a ‘modern day Robin Hood’ who ‘robs the poor to help the rich’ and ‘embezzled and cheated the taxpayer’.

Now deleted, a spokesperson for the department said that the hack is being investigated, but currently it is unsure if it originated from inside or outside the department.

Sent at about 7.30pm on Saturday night, the tweets come as there are calls to sack Miller and that MPs shouldn’t be allowed to police their own expenses.
