Sport Relief is looking to up engagement with the creation of a website and app by Hi Mum! Said Dad, which encourages the public to run, walk, cycle or swim their way towards a nationwide one million miles target.

The app was created to help extend participation for the Sport Relief event, which is normally associated with only being held over a weekend, and features a real-time update of the number of miles contributed.

Craig Wills, managing director at Hi Mum! Said Dad, said that as well as increasing the participation window, the creating of the app also focussed on bringing the nation together: “It’s really about uniting the national and fostering participation in a mass effort across sporting disciplines, bringing everyone together for a goal and a good cause. You feel like you’re not just running for yourself: you’re contributing to a bigger event.”

Wills and his team created the app so that it works with other fitness and running tools such as Map My Run, allowing miles from a user’s favourite tracking app to be added to the total miles.

Launching today, the app already sits with over 3000 miles on it.

To help increase participation, the app also has gamification aspects, with users ‘unlocking’ levels and seeing exclusive content when they reach different milestones.

Wills added: “It’s all about rewarding people for their contribution, beyond just the reward of being involved in something meaningful. There are exclusive badges and content that you can share on social media, on Facebook etcetera.”

The app, which is available on iOS and Android, as well as the desktop and mobile versions of the site, also allow users to donate, play games, and invite their friends to join the effort.
