Samsung has shown off a prototype television whose curvature can be adjusted by remote control at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

The 85in flexible LED screen heralds what is expected to be a flood of such devices as manufacturers seek to differentiate themselves in the marketplace.

Already rival LG has announced a slightly smaller 77in OLED screen which it says offers a similarly improved experience, by customising its display relative to the number of people watching and where they are seated.

Samsung execs were left red-faced however when Hollywood director Michael Bay, hired to champion the new telly, was faced with a malfunctioning autocue – leading him to abruptly walk off stage when asked what he thought of the device.

Will Findlater, global online editor for Stuff Magazine, told the BBC: "The jury is still very much out on whether curved displays make much difference to image quality and the experience you have when watching a TV. At this stage it does feel like a bit of a gimmick."
