Marketing Manchester is set to debut its annual Christmas campaign during Monday's Coronation Street.

Shown in two ITV regions targeting areas such as Yorkshire, the Midlands and the South East, the ad will encourage viewers to visit the city's Christmas Markets, enjoy late night shopping and even consider an overnight stay during the Christmas party season.

The Regional Growth Fund through a partnership with VisitEngland, the Heart of Manchester BID and over 25 commercial partners have funded the campaign which sees the Christmas characters of 2012 return, this time joined by a family of penguins.

"Manchester’s Christmas offering is very special indeed," said Andrew Stokes, chief executive of Marketing Manchester. "We’re delighted to be working with our colleagues at VisitEngland, putting the invaluable Regional Growth Fund money to good use on a highly targeted and fully integrated campaign aimed at delivering a strong boost to the local economy."

TV and online activity will be supported by print campaign spanning national and regional press as well as radio advertising. Half a million printed leaflets featuring Manchester events are also set to be distributed over the Christmas period.

Social media promotion will centre around the hashtag #MCRChristmas.
