Newspapers in the UK have reported that David Beckham is set to receive a Knighthood, completing a remarkable public turnaround in the footballer's image, cementing the success of the ‘Brand Beckham’ campaign.

Fifteen years ago, effigies of the footballer were being hung from lampposts and burned in the streets as his infamous petulant outburst in the crucial Argentina v England match at the soccer World Cup saw him red carded.

It has been reported that David Beckham is set to be Knighted personally by close friend Prince William.

The citation is reported to be for services to football and services to charity.

The Sun newspaper reported that the UK tax authorities are scrutinising Beckham’s finances to ensure there are no embarrassing economic issues that may reflect poorly on the Knighthood.

“HM Revenue and Customs look at the higher honours – specifically at the high earners like sports people – to see if there is anything they want to double check.”, the Sun’s source reportedly said.

Beckham's former manager, Sir Alex Ferguson, said last month that the global rise of the so called ‘Brand Beckham’ that emerged following footballer David Beckham’s marriage to Victoria Adams cost the footballer his focus.
