Findery is scheduled to be launched at via Australia's Apple iTunes App Store on Wednesday. It is a relaunch of the former Pinwheel app.

Fake said that the app offers users the chance to learn more about local history, celebrity gossip and businesses by reading digital notes left at locations on a map.

She said it could be "the beginning of something that could be very tremendous".

"People have been using it for a variety of uses," she said.

"Some of it is celebrity gossip - you can find out where celebrities have been nearby - while a New York realty has been using it not just to list properties for sale but for showing off their local knowledge, like here's the best chocolate shop in New York.

"We've also got an aunt who is leaving notes for her seven-year-old niece all over the map. They're really lovely, personal and sentimental notes."

Fake founded Flickr in 2004.
