Mike Lazaridis and Douglas Fregin, co-founders of struggling smartphone firm BlackBerry, are considering mounting a takeover bid for the company.

Between them they currently own 8 per cent of BlackBerry shares but a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission reveals their intent to purchase the 92 per cent remaining stake.

This would see Lazaridis and Fregin own the firm outright once more, either as individuals or in partnership with other parties.

BlackBerry has been hit hard in recent months as it struggles to combat fierce competition from the likes of Apple and Samsung.
