Workers spend about an hour a day carrying out non work-related tasks, such as going on Facebook, online shopping and searching for holidays, research from Quidco.com has found.

The study looked at 2,000 workers and found that an average of seven personal tasks are carried out during work hours every day, with online banking and checking the weather forecast the tasks most likely to be carried out.

Andy Oldham, managing director of cashback site Quidco.com, said: "Everyone gets distracted at work and it seems many workers are spending a large chunk of their working hours concentrating on personal jobs instead.

"And with good internet access on our mobile phones now, shopping and surfing the internet for personal reasons are no longer reserved only for those who work in front of a computer.”

A quarter say they carry out certain tasks during work hours because it is something which can only be done between working hours, while a fifth say they do it because they are bored.
