WPP agency Grey has promoted Michael Houston to chief executive of its North American division.

Houston, who was previously the chief operating officer of Grey New York, has become responsible for expansion of the agency through adding offices in more American cities and expanding services like digital.

He will report directly to James R. Heekin, chairman and chief executive of the Grey Group.

Martin Sorrell, chief executive of WPP, said in an email that he was “delighted for Michael,” who is “a key member of the Grey management team.”

Sorrell added he has “done an outstanding job,” and “thoroughly deserves this recognition for his success, which is based on an exceptional track record.”

Houston has previously worked at agencies including Chiat/Day, Kirshenbaum Bond & Partners and Y&R as well as at firms like And Partners, Elias Arts and Landor Associates.

He will continue to share the leadership duties at Grey New York with Tor Myhren, president and chief creative officer.
