Former IPA director general Hamish Pringle has called on current IPA president Ian Priest to join the legal challenge to systematic late payments under his ADAPT agenda. The ADAPT agenda, revealed by Priest at his inaugural address in April, covers five key strands - Alliances, Deliverables, Actions, Profit and Talent - which affect the IPA and its member agencies. The strands will be brought to life through a series of events during Priest's two-year presidency.Through Twitter Pringle called on Priest to give his backing to James Morley, owner of Northern Ireland-based staff uniform supplier Blue Autumn, who has been launching claims against late-paying customers since 2007 and has secured more than £40,000 in court victories so far.

Priest's backing could bring prominence the 'little known' Late Payment of Commercial Debts (Interest) Act 1998 which Morley uses to challenge his customers. The Act allows suppliers to charge interest of 8.5p on late payments as well as compensation of £40, £70 or £100 depending on the size of the invoice in question. Joining the legal challenge to customers who refuse to pay would come under the 'profit' strand of the ADAPT agenda and would help to claw back some of the £30bn said to be owed to businesses in outstanding bills according to payments firm Bacs.
