The BIO Agency research finds 142 million Americans spend $20-$50 monthly via m-commerce

Research from The BIO Agency has discovered that 142 million Americans spend between $20 and $50 online through their smartphones and tablets each month.

The most common purchases made through m-commerce in the US were entertainment products such as apps, games, e-books and music. Jewellery, gadgets, fashion, food and travel were found to be the least purchased items.

The BIO Agency's findings also showed that 18-24s were the most likely age group to use their smartphones and tablets for shopping, whilst the over 55s were the least likely.

The 45-54 year old market was found to be the most lucrative for book retailers, with 24-34 year olds significantly more likely to purchase food on the go than any other age group. This group was also more likely to buy travel products via m-commerce, suggesting the channel is used as a time saving device. The 35-44 year old age range was found to be the largest market for fashion retailers, potentially as a result of being the catalogue generation and more comfortable with mail order.

However, 41 per cent of Americans (103 million) were found to not use their smartphones or tablets to purchase products and services online, highlighting that there is still a massive opportunity for brands and retailers in the US to capitalise on their spend through mobile and tablet channels.

Managing director of The BIO Agency, Peter Veash, commented: "Research shows that m-commerce does not cannibalise traditional or online shopping, it increases overall spend.

"Those brands that continue to build trust-based, long-lasting relationships with their customers will, as an inevitable consequence see sales through tablets and mobile increase. Any growth through m-commerce aligned with a good marketing strategy will significantly increase the brand’s market share.”
