Huffington Post partners with Asahi Shimbun Company to launch Huffington Post Japan

The Huffington Post Media Group has partnered with the Asahi Shimbun Company unveiling plans to launch a Japanese-language version of The Huffington Post.

Revealed in a joint announcement from chair, president and editor-in-chief of the Huffington Post Media Group, Arianna Huffington, and Shinichi Yoshida, executive editor of the Asahi Shimbun Company, Huffington said she was “delighted to welcome Japan to the HuffPost family”.

Huffington added: “As our first edition in Asia, HuffPost Japan is more than just one more step toward our goal of expanding to new countries and continents; it's a reflection of our commitment to inviting ever more voices to join our growing global conversation. Partnering with the Asahi Shimbun Company, with its local expertise and grasp of Japan's history, culture, and unique personality, we'll be telling the stories that matter most both to those who live in Japan and those who care deeply about Japan -- and just as important, helping the people of Japan tell their stories themselves.”

Speaking of the partnership Yoshida, said: “The market for blogs and digital news and opinion in Japan is rapidly expanding, so this is a timely opportunity to meet that demand. We believe The Asahi Shimbun Company, with its deep reporting experience and nationwide network of opinion leaders, is perfectly suited to the challenge, and we are excited to have the opportunity to work with The Huffington Post to create this new platform.”

Huffington Post Japan will bring together the local expertise of the Asahi Shimbun Company and The Huffington Post’s signature mix of news, blogs, video, chat and social media. Huffington Post Japan is said to already be in the process of recruiting an experienced editor-in-chief and editorial team in preparation for its launch.

The venture is part of the Huffington Post’s continued international expansion. Huffington Post Media Group CEO, Jimmy Maymann added: “This is a key step in the global growth of The Huffington Post as it marks our entrance into Asia, the fastest-growing region in the world, economically. We are thrilled to have The Asahi Shimbun Company, a leading publisher in Japan and one of the largest newspapers in the world, as our partner.”
