The picture on the front page of the New York Post, showing a man about to be struck by a subway after he was pushed onto the tracks, has led to condemnation of the newspaper and photographer on social media.

The photographer, R. Umar Abbasi, is a freelancer for the Post, who was waiting on the platform of the 49th Street station when he saw Ki Suk Han being pushed onto the tracks.

Abbasi said that he got the shot because he was firing off the flash on his camera to alert the conductor of the subway.

The Twittersphere has gone into overdrive on the subject, with @MarinasDiamonds receiving over 700 retweets for her comment ‘Disgusted by front page headline of New York Post. Treating the tragic death of a man like a poster for an action movie. I feel sick’.

The New York Post tweeted the article, alongside the picture, with the words ‘This is so sad. Tragedy on the NYC Subway. This man is doomed after being pushed onto the track. RIP’

The wording did not ease the grumbles on Twitter, with @KareemYoussef tweeting ‘congrats on the shittiest newspaper cover ever. You are heartless, terrible people. Whoever approved that cover should be fired.’

The Post has not replied to any comments made by the public on Twitter.
