Pop star Justin Bieber has been forced to respond to vociferous criticism on Twitter after posting an Instagram picture of himself posing with Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper – clad in a t-shirt, overalls and a backwards baseball cap.

Bieber donned the 1990s rapper-style outfit to receive a Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal from the politician on Saturday, saying: “I met the Prime Minister in overalls lol”.

Condemnation of his dress sense was swift however with Gawker labelling the star a ‘white trash prince’ and the Twitterati lining up to denounce Bieber as ‘disrespectful’.

Responding to his critics again via Instagram, Bieber defended: “The pic of me and the Prime Minister was taken in a room in the arena where i was performing at that day. I walked straight from my meet and greet to him, if you “Hayley” expect me to have a change of clothes let a loan a suit at that specific time that’s crazy,

“It wasn’t like it was like I was going into his environment we were at a hockey arena. Wow am I ever white trash Hayley Peterson lol.”
