Apple has launched the latest iteration of its much hyped iPhone device, the first such launch without the charismatic Steve Jobs at the helm and the first to debut without any significant surprises.

As has been well leaked in advance the new device sports the same form factor as its predecessor, but now 18% thinner, 20% lighter and twice as fast to boot.

The screen itself is likely to be the main draw for most and is now enlarged to four inches – meaning apps designed for earlier models will run with black bars at the top and bottom of the screen.

It also sports a pair of custom designed ‘EarPods’ which Apple claims will improve sound quality.

Apple is now facing stiffer competition than ever before from the likes of Samsung, with iPhone sales collapsing by more than 9m to 26m in the last quarter as people held off for news on the iPhone 5 or snapped up rival Android based devices such as the Galaxy S3.

Compatible with 4G mobile broadband the phone is due to launch in Britain on 21 September.
