The shooting of a British family in the French Alps has been buried by the Gallic press, the Guardian has claimed.

Despite the murder of four people, two members of the al-Hilli family, a Swedish woman and a passing cyclist, making front page news in the UK, The Guardian's Kim Willsher has reported that the press in France has viewed it as a ‘small story’.

Apparently the French daily newspaper Libération carried a short report on the crime on page 14, using the headline "Unexplained carnage in Haute-Savoie" and Le Figaro ran it on page eight.

Only the local newspapers are said to have placed the story as front page news.

The Guardian has also reported that French media reports have claimed that the British media has ‘gone wild’ for the story, and also claimed that British reports showed a ‘sarcastic’ tone about the handling of the investigation.

A seven-year-old and a four-year-old girl survived the shootings, which police are investigating in order to uncover a motive for the crime.
