A BBC crime reporter has unmasked a teenage mugger after being held at knifepoint at Muswell Hill, North London for his iPhone.

Tom Symonds, familiar to news hounds as the BBC’s crime and legal affairs correspondent, was subsequently handed an iPad with a built in tracking device by police to locate the wayward phone.

Symonds said: “I was in the back of the police car staring dumbly at a brand-new iPad. I was seeing whether I could trace my phone using the Find My iPhone app.

“To my astonishment, its location appeared on the map. We set off through the streets at high speed to get to the estate where my phone seemed to be."

Jason Harewood, 19, was subsequently apprehended and has been sent to a young offenders institution to serve out a four year sentence.
