Britain’s biggest carmaker Nissan has launched a campaign to promote safe towing ahead of the Great British getaway, following independent research commissioned by Nissan uncovering that four out of ten ‘towers’ have had no formal towing advice or training.

The integrated campaign, spearheaded by Staniforthin partnership with TBWA\London, will launch a national news campaign consisting of broadcast, print and digital activity this week in order to raise awareness of the key safety guidelines.

Group account director at Staniforth, Julie Wilson, commented: “The results of the Nissan research highlight a key knowledge gap in towing legislation and safety guidelines.

“Through this campaign it is hoped we will raise awareness of the key safety measures surrounding towing, ensuring ‘towers’ have a safe and enjoyable journey this summer.”

A national dealer campaign will also see a complimentary guide to towing offered to all ‘towers’, available for collection from all Nissan dealerships nationwide and to download from the Nissan website.

Nissan will also be hosting a number of free events providing drivers first-hand advice on safely hitching and manoeuvring vehicles. The Institute of Advanced Motorists has also produced a video in association with the manufacturer to be featured online.

Rachael Gregory, Nissan 4X4 manager, said it was “essential drivers are up-to-speed with road safety,” especially now as “more and more ‘towers’” hit the roads in the summer.

Gregory continued: “We encourage new and experienced ‘towers’ to ensure they are correctly informed as to their vehicle’s towing capabilities and to follow essential safety guidelines.”
