Microsoft has unveiled a preview of what it terms the most ‘ambitious’ update to its popular Office suite ever, Office 2013.

The revamped programs now integrate with the web, offer PDF editing functions and are fully compatible with the Windows 8 OS.

Users will now be encouraged to log in so that they can automatically return to a document irrespective of the device thanks to integration with Microsoft’s cloud storage system – SkyDrive.

Specific tools have also been given various upgrades with Word now allowing users to more readily embed YouTube clips and Skype integration allowing calls and IM to be built in directly.

Social networking functionality has also been given a boost, with users able to ‘follow’ colleagues, documents and tasks.

These new bells and whistles mean the software is now fully optimised for touch screen users, ensuring compatibility with the tablets and phone popular with students, families and consumers.

Microsoft hope this will broaden its appeal from its current dependence on the corporate market, where it enjoys a market share of around 90%.
