Apple has settled a dispute over the rights to the iPad trademark in China by making a £38m payment to Proview.

The Chinese firm had registered the name back in 2000 but Apple claimed that they had acquired the worldwide rights in 2009 Proview’s Taiwanese affiliate.

Proview countered however that the affiliate did not have the right to sell the rights for China.

The dispute had led to iPads being removed from sale in some parts of China.

In a statement the Guangdong High People's Court said: “The iPad dispute resolution is ended, Apple Inc. has transferred $60m to the account of the Guangdong High Court as requested in the mediation letter."
