A Twitter ‘blackout’ is being observed today, January 28, by tweeters angered by the micro blogging sites approach to censoring tweets.

It follows moves by the social media firm to censor content on a country-by-country basis where a national government deems particular content to be inappropriate.

In response users are galvanizing behind the #TwitterBlackout hashtag whereby people refuse to tweet for the entire 24hr period.

Some, including Mashable’s Josh Catone, have argued however that the changes aren’t all bad with content only censored in the country in which a complaint is made – not globally.
