ESPN Goals has passed the 1 million download mark. The app was originally released last season as part of a subscription-funded model but take-up has rocketed since it was relaunched this season as a free download.

The new version, rereleased with additional features such as a video goal alerts, has achieved over 50m page views since the start of the season. ESPN is now converting these eyeballs into cash – it has signed intro ad deals with EA Sports and Continental Tyres, and will also run display ads.

The app has also boosted take-up of ESPN’s subscription package.

Tom Gleeson, ESPN International’s VP digital media, said: “The app reflects our approach to bringing fans multi-screen access to football, which is something we will continue to enhance as our business grows in the UK.”
