More than 200 of the UK design industry’s great and good gathered in the very auspicious surroundings of The Institute of Directors HQ on Pall Mall last week for the Speed Podge Lunch 2011 where the theme was speed dating.

Sponsored by The Drum, FutureBrand, Naked Penguin Boy, Shipley IP, Service Graphics and The Talent Business, The Design Podge Lunch kicked off around 12.30pm with champers before guests moved through to the dining room for lunch and the speed dating began in ernest.

Podge Godfather Phil Jones greeted his guests with a colourful and passionate speech before lunch and the customary changing of seats half way through saw nobody getting lumbered with a dullard for too long and ensured those that were looking for their perfect partner stood a good chance of doing so.

Some of the notables in attendance were D&AD CEO Tim Lindsay, creative legend Billy Mawhinney, Martin-Lambie Nairn, James Somerville of ATTIK, former Liverpool footballer and Predator boot designer Craig Johnston (who tried to pretend he was Phil Jones), Jeff Kindleysides of Checkland Kindleysides and Kati Price (no not that one!) of The Design Council among many many others.

Late afternoon saw the party continue in the IOD’s basement bar, where The Drum took the opportunity to grab some attendees to do video interviews, which may or may not ever see the light of day. A decision is pending on whether what was said were incredible insights into the creativite mind or simply the confused mumblings of very inebriated creative minds.

That said, any creative minds feeling the pace were rescued by emergency bacon butties around 7.30pm before the party raged on into the night. Roll on December’s next Podge Lunch.
