The CNN host had said nothing as the coverage of the British phone hacking scandal went on and on. Now finally he has said something . . .

Now a CNN host, Piers Morgan - who became editor of the Screws for two years in 1994 at age 28 - insisted last week that he was NOT going to join the “witch hunt” against News Corp.

But Piers, who also worked for the Sun and later became editor of the Daily Mirror, has been coming under a lot of pressure to speak out.

Finally, after being accused of avoiding coverage of the story, he said something.

For the usually talkative Piers, it was not a lot.
“For the record, I do not believe any story we published in either title (NoW and Sun) was ever gained in an unlawful manner. Nor have I ever seen anything to suggest that,” the CNN host said on Monday night.

Ironically, it was Piers's last paper, which printed one of the most outrageous of the recent claims. The Daily Mirror on July 11 reported that the News of the World may have attempted to tap the cell phones of Sept. 11 victims. No evidence for this has yet emerged although US authorities are investigating. Piers wasn't going to comment on that either.
