In a move that could revolutionise online gaming, Activision is to add a premium subscription service to the release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Call of Duty Elite will be included in the release of Modern Warfare 3 as an optional service in which new content will be added and available to play to monthly subscribers.

The story was broken under embargo by the WSJ, with the company moving to explain that only certain aspects would cost money, although the core online multiplayer element would remain free, and that anyone paying for add-ons will not be given a strategic advantage over non-players.

For some time questions have been raised as to when online gaming would look to commercialise the offer outside of users buying the necessary elements in order to play games.

Modern Warfare is expected to be officially unveiled this week at some stage.
