Hugh Grant has criticised the media for intrusion of privacy and said that he hopes the tabloid press "goes out of business".

Speaking to Richard Bacon on 5 Live - which was broadcast live from the Independent's offices this afternoon - the Hollywood actor clarified reports that he had defended super injunctions for "naughty men", saying that the quotes from his appearance on Newsnight had been taken out of context by newspapers unhappy that he had criticised their profession.

But he defended the right of high profile figures to privacy, deriding newspapers for claiming to report in the public interest while really only looking to make money and sell papers.

Grant also claimed that if he were to win a substantial sum in damages from a tabloid he would demand that they never print his name again rather than take any money.

The Four Weddings and a Funeral actor went on to say that he did not believe there was any necessity for the existence of the tabloid press.

He also revealed that he had been visited by police in the last week about being a victim of the News of the World phone hacking and is currently considering whether to sue.

Grant recently turned the tables on phone hackers by taping a conversation with a former News of the World journalist.
