The West Midlands publication will aim to publish breaking news on a free-to-view front page of their website, but other content will be charged for.

Deputy editor Keith Harrison said the paywall was a way of "rewarding our loyal readers".

The premium part of the site will be offered as part of a bundled print-and-online subscription, not sold separetely.

Editors will decide which content will appear on which side of the paywall and the new site is expected to launch in the next few months.

Harrison said: "Other [regional publishers] have tried paywall content - some with varying results. I think the difference to what we're doing is we're not putting it behind the paywall as a standalone package.

Expressandstar.com had 581,528 monthly unique users in the second half of 2010 - a year-on-year increase of 15.5%.
