The Shropshire town Much Wenlock is looking cash in on its connections to the modern Olympics by boosting tourism during the build up to London 2012.

Having appointed leisure PR specialist Fido, the Council’s Economic Development Team is looking to bring to life the story of the origins of the Olympics in the town to attract visitors and support local businesses.

Much Wenlock has long been referred to as the birthplace of the modern Olympics through its links with William Penny Brookes, the inspiration behind the modern Olympic movement.

This Olympics connection has been referenced in the naming of the official London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic mascots Wenlock and Mandeville.

This is the second Olympics related commission for Fido, with the agency having completed a feasibility study for We Play, the North West’s 2012 cultural legacy project.
